Reason polarity / phase vs PHIXER continuous rotation for mono-safe low end
Reason Studios still gives you channel polarity invert, Main Mixer / monitor mono fold, Combinator dual-path hygiene, and small clip align before export. That is the stock first pass. Continuous stereo phase is a different job: leftover L/R fights that still cancel by band after polarity, timing, and mono fold. This page is the Reason polarity / phase comparison. The broader Reason map is rack/mix fold / Combinator. Cousin DAW angles: Studio One Mixtool polarity and Harrison Mixbus / Ardour polarity.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux). Amount / From / To rotate problem bands so mono fold keeps low end without flattening stereo. In Reason, load PHIXER as a VST3/CLAP/AU effect where your host path allows (not a Rack Extension substitute for polarity). It is not a replacement for channel polarity invert, Main Mixer mono fold, or delay align. Polarity and timing first.
What Reason already does
Channel polarity invert
A 180° flip on one path. First fix for dual Audio Tracks, DI+mic into separate paths, dual-cab racks, or parallel Combinator chains that fight. If body returns immediately, stop. You do not need spectral rotation.
Main Mixer / monitor mono fold
Headphones and wide stereo racks can hide cancel. Engage Main Mixer mono or a monitor fold. Toggle it. That is the Reason mono-check. Broader habits: Reason mono phase guide.
Clip align / small delay
Small delay on one path often fixes timing fights before any continuous rotator. Correlation meters can look safe while Main Mixer mono still thins Mid. Headphones still lie.
Where polarity stops
- Cancel is band-specific. Lows gone, mids still wide. A single 180° flip is too blunt. Stereo width can look fine while mono fold still hollows bass.
- The part must stay stereo. A stereo FX return, Combinator bed, or widener path that you cannot collapse to mono without losing the image.
- Polarity + delay already tried. Invert and clip align did not restore body. Residual L/R spectral fight remains.
Studio One users hit the same leftover after Mixtool polarity: Studio One Mixtool continuous phase. Mixbus / Ardour is the same shape: Mixbus / Ardour continuous rotation.
Reason polarity decision table
| You notice… | First try (stock) | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Body returns when you invert polarity on one dual path | Keep the invert. Done. | Do not reach for PHIXER. |
| Stereo OK, Main Mixer mono still thins | Trust mono fold over headphones | Re-check Main Mixer / monitor mono before export. |
| Stereo bass still hollows by band after polarity + delay | Null-test / mono honesty | PHIXER Amount / From / To on that stereo bed. |
| Combinator / stereo imagers huge in cans | Bypass or simplify the widener | Mono fold honesty. Not a repair job. |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / sample choice | Not an L/R phase job. |
Reason habit (about 90 seconds)
- Main Mixer mono or monitor fold. Note what disappears (kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest).
- On dual paths: polarity invert on one Audio Track / rack path. Re-check mono.
- If timing is the problem, clip align / delay nudge. Re-check.
- If a stereo bed still cancels by band, audition PHIXER VST3/CLAP/AU. A/B with the plugin bypassed, still in mono.
When PHIXER helps in Reason
- The clip or FX return is already stereo and must stay stereo.
- Polarity, delay align, Main Mixer mono, and Combinator hygiene are cleaned up.
- You can hear clearer mono body with PHIXER engaged and the image still usable in stereo.
- You are not using it to replace polarity invert or to "fix" stereo-width / Haas width.
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not Main Mixer mono-folded yet.
- Polarity or delay already restored the fold.
- You want PHIXER as a widener or a polarity clone. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
Quick path: Reason Main Mixer mono → polarity on dual paths → clip align → PHIXER only for leftover continuous L/R fights → mono fold again before export.
